These Heroes Were Paid Hefty Sums For Their Biopics

Biopics are interesting movies and are well received by audiences because they are informative, real and have a moral at the end of the movie. They are inspired by real life and have a way of emotionally connecting with the audience. With Bollywood being popularly known for its masala and drama, biopics are out-of-the-box movies that keep it real with the audience and show us what life is. Be it movies like The Dirty Picture that portrays popular actress Silk Smitha’s life or the movie Bandit Queen that shows us the crass reality of the life of the famous Phoolan Devi, biopics have a way of staying with us in some way even after the movie. Some of these biopics are made on the lives of people who have passed on from this world and others on living heroes who have been an inspiration in our lives.

However, no matter what the movie is on, in the end, it’s a business. This is exactly why the people whose story is used to earn profits at the box office are given a certain amount of money. Here are a few heroes who have been remunerated for sharing details of their lives with us and given Bollywood a chance to capture their beautiful journey through these movies.

1. Mahavir Singh Phogat

Popular sports biopic Dangal is based on the life of the Phogat family. The movie focuses on Mahavir Singh Phogat’s quest to train his daughters in wrestling to win a gold medal on an international level. Mahavir is played by Aamir Khan and the biopic is directed by Nitesh Tiwari. It was released all over the world and became a huge success. The movie made about 240 crores in just nine days and Mahavir Singh was paid a lump sum amount of Rs. 80 lakhs.

2. Milkha Singh

Another sports biopic and the first of its kind in India, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The protagonist is played by heartthrob Farhan Akhtar and as the title suggests, it is based on the life of the famous Milkha Singh. Not only was the movie a super-duper hit but it also filled our hearts with pride knowing that we have such a hero in our country. The fact that surprised us the most was that the “Flying Singh”, as he is called, charged merely Rs. 1 in the form of notes that were printed in 1985. However, the makers of the film had promised to give this unsung hero 10% but they failed to fulfill their promise (1).

3. Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Whether you are a cricket fan or not, Dhoni is a name we all know. M.S Dhoni: The Untold Story is based on the life of the former captain of the Indian cricket team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The biopic was directed by Neeraj Pandey and shares some insights and lesser-known facts on Dhoni’s life beyond his career in cricket. He is played by the adorable and very talented Sushant Singh Rajput who portrayed Dhoni’s life so well that it won the hearts of the audience worldwide. Dhoni charged a whopping amount of Rs. 80 crores to share details of his real-life for the movie.

4. Mary Kom

Just as the title suggests, this sports biopic is based on the life of the former Indian Olympic boxer Mary Kom. The film features Priyanka Chopra as Mary Kom and it depicts the struggles she faced while pursuing her career as a boxer and making it all the way to represent India in the Olympics. It was directed by Omung Kumar and is one of the best sports biopic movies of all time. The film was a huge success and it made over 100 crores globally but Mary Kom received a sum of Rs. 25 lakhs only.

5. Sachin Tendulkar

God of Cricket as he is called, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s life was made into a documentary called Sachin: A Billion Dreams. It was released in 2017 in India and although it was not a film, it made over 7 crores in just two days. For all Tendulkar fans, this documentary is a treat that makes you laugh, sing and sob along with your most inspiring sports hero. He charged about Rs. 40 crores for this documentary and we don’t think it is too much because he is worth so much more!

6. Paan Singh Tomar

We know that corruption is rooted in our society when it penetrates something as pure as the sports industry. A must watch, Paan Singh Tomar is based on the life of an Indian athlete who becomes a bandit in the Chambal Valley. Paan Singh was a soldier in the Indian Army who became a renowned bandit. The biopic is directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and features the competent Irrfan Khan in the titular role. The gold medalist’s family was given a sum of Rs. 15 lakhs for the movie.

7. Sanjay Dutt

Sanju, a biographical drama, was a box office hit and created a storm of success. Directed by Raju Hirani, Sanjay Dutt was played by Ranbir Kapoor in the biopic and it engulfed the audience in an emotional ride on the controversial life of Sanjay Dutt. The biopic made approximately 439 crores and Sanjay Dutt took 10 crores plus parts of the profits from the box office.

Bollywood has made several other biopics that have been received well by the audience but these are the ones who have reaped the benefits.
