9 Bollywood Actors Who Rejected Hollywood Movies Like A Boss

While we’ve seen many of our favorite actors slowly transition from making just Bollywood movies to going global, it’s surprising to see some pretty popular names rejecting big-budget Hollywood films. While it’s perfectly understandable that they might have had specific personal or professional reasons behind rejecting the roles, it’s surprising to a lot of fans that they did.

Some of the names on this list had actually starred in Hollywood movies before or went on to star in Hollywood films at a later point:

1. Naseeruddin Shah

Considering that Naseeruddin Shah played a lead role in the movie The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, he’s clearly no stranger to Hollywood. However, during a Twitter chat with a news agency, the veteran actor revealed that he was offered to audition for the role of Albus Dumbledore from the Harry Potter movie series. The actor explained that the filmmakers behind the series approached his agent and asked if he would audition for the role following the untimely death of the original Dumbledore, Richard Harris. Unfortunately for many of his fans, the actor turned down the role and later went on to play Captain Nemo in The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

2. Shah Rukh Khan

Before Anil Kapoor landed the role of Big B inspired character, ‘Prem Kumar’ in the movie Slumdog Millionaire, it was Shah Rukh Khan who was approached. Director Danny Boyle originally wanted Khan to play the part as he had hosted a season of Kaun Banega Crorepati in the year 2007. Unfortunately, Shah Rukh Khan turned down the role as he believed he wasn’t a suitable candidate and wouldn’t do justice to the part.

3. Irrfan Khan

Another Khan on this list to reject a Hollywood role was Irrfan Khan. The talented actor was offered the role of Matt Damon’s character in the sci-fi movie, Interstellar. Unfortunately, the schedule conflicted with his role in the film, The Lunchbox. The actor was required to stay in the United States for four months during the filming of his sequences. Luckily, The Lunchbox did exceptionally well and won critical acclaim, so he didn’t lose out on much. But imagine skipping out on a movie directed by the legendary Christopher Nolan?

4. Priyanka Chopra

Yes, The Priyanka Chopra. After Priyanka tied the knot with Hollywood cutie, Nick Jonas, she was the latest hot topic all across Hollywood. The actress was initially offered her first Hollywood role in the movie Immortal. Sadly, the actress had to turn down the part as she had already committed to playing a lead role in the film Saat Khoon Maaf. The role eventually landed in the lap of Freida Pinto and Priyanka’s Saat Khoon Maaf lead her to achieve cult status amongst the film community. The actresses abilities were praised, and many critics called this the ‘role of a lifetime’.

5. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

The former Miss World was offered a role opposite Brad Pitt’s character in the movie Troy. Sadly, the actress turned down the role as it required her to get ‘cozy’ with Pitt’s character. Quite the bummer for fans who would love to see their onscreen chemistry and watch them sizzle on screen.

6. Deepika Padukone

The queen of Bollywood herself was offered an audition for a lead role in the 2015 movie Fast And Furious 7. The actress would be joining the ranks of Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and many more if she had taken up the role. Sadly the actress turned down the role as she was too busy shooting for Farah Khan’s movie Happy New Year. The movie went on to become a box office hit despite receiving mainly mixed reviews from critics.

7. Hrithik Roshan

Many fans were disappointed when Hrithik reportedly turned down the role of playing the character of Vicente in the movie Pink Panther 2. Popularly known as the
‘Greek God’ of India, the actor has starred in multiple critically acclaimed films including, Guzaarish, Jodhaa Akbar, Lakshya and buddy film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

8. Ronit Roy

The Udaan actor turned down a lead role in the Oscar-winning film on terrorism, Zero Dark Thirty. Instead, the talented TV turned big-screen actor chose to act in the Karan Johar directed Student Of The Year. We bet this is a choice he truly regrets (no offense to SOTY fans).

9. Dilip Kumar

Legendary actor Dilip Kumar chose to turn down a leading role in the 1962 film, Lawrence Of Arabia. Director David Lean wanted Dilip to audition for the role of Sherif Ali, a tribal chieftain. After Dilip Kumar rejected the role, it went to Omar Sharif who won an Oscar nomination for his performance in the film.

It’s incredible that the world is opening up to the idea of casting South Asian actors/actresses in lead roles and we are thrilled to see so many of our childhood idols immortalize themselves on Hollywood’s big screen and introduce the Western audience to our culture. We hope to see many more Indian actors showcase their talents in Tinseltown.
