If you’re the kind of person who finds yourself cringing when you browse through Facebook and see pictures of people getting married, trust us, you’re not alone. Sometimes people are just not cut out for marriage or simply don’t believe in the concept of it, and that’s perfectly alright. Read this list to know why most people choose not to get married:
1. Commitment Is A Tough Pill To Swallow
For some of us, staying committed to even a single house or food place is difficult, let alone staying committed to one person. If you’re the kind of person who tends to stray while in relationships or has you have a hard time trusting others, it’s better to stay away from marriage. Maybe the thought of being with one person for the rest of your life scares you. And that’s perfectly alright. It’s almost 2020, and the world is your oyster. If monogamy isn’t your cup of tea, try giving an open relationship a shot instead. Or maybe even a polyamorous one.
2. You Believe You’re Too Selfish
There is absolutely nothing wrong with putting yourself first. But when it comes to relationships, you have to learn how to compromise. If the idea of putting someone else’s needs above your own seems unfathomable for you, maybe marriage shouldn’t be at the top of your priority list. As long as you’re upfront and know exactly what you want to get out of a relationship, that’s all that matters.
3. You’re Convinced You’re Going To End Up Divorced
A lot of times, children of divorced parents have low expectations when it comes to marriage. They tend to be less optimistic than others. On the other side, a lot of the time, these children grow up to become super dependent on their partners because they believe they did not receive that kind of love and affection from their parents. Feelings of unresolved conflict, abandonment issues, and being cynical about marriage, in general, can lead to someone developing a distaste for marriage.
4. The Only Thing You’re Married To Is Your Career
In the words of Lady Gaga, “Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you’re wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn’t love you anymore.” A lot of people choose to be married to their careers over someone else, and that is entirely their choice. When your job is your first priority, it can be challenging to find that perfect work-life and love-life balance. Not to mention setting aside some time for your friends as well.
5. Your Sense of Independence Is Too Strong
It’s okay to be a strong, independent person. Not everyone needs a partner to take care of them. If you’re the kind of person who enjoys their freedom and can’t stand the thought of sharing your personal space with another person, staying single might be a smart option. If you’re an ace at budgeting, an all-star employee and a whiz at fixing things, maybe changing things up will do you more harm than good.
6. You’re Undergoing A Major Transition
Maybe you just started a new job, graduated from college or shifted to a new city. Whatever be your reasons, if you’re not in the right mental space to commit to another person, it’s not a good idea to proceed with getting married. It’s okay to take some time to yourself and just breathe.
7. You’ve Been In And Out Of Difficult Relationships
This can very obviously have a significant impact on your perception of relationship and marriage. If you’ve struggled with complicated relationships for most of your life and have a hard time believing you can have a successful relationship, it’s a better idea to disengage from the thought. At least, for a short duration of time.
8. Marriage Is Too Passé For You
Marriage is a social construct, and it’s okay to not believe in the concept of it. If you have a partner you’re committed to, and you know you both are in it for the long haul, why get a piece of paper involved? Different strokes for different folks. It’s alright to march to the beat of your own drum and choose not to tie the knot.
9. You Can’t Stand The Idea Of Sharing Your Bed
Let’s face it. Every single one of us loves the feeling of coming over and crashing on a big bed with cozy sheets and pillows. Imagine coming home and pouncing onto your bed only to have someone else’s book or kindle poke into your hip. Ouch, right? If you’re the kind of person who has had multiple partners complain about your bed sheet hogging habits or you just love having conversations with yourself in your sleep, maybe marriage isn’t for you.
10. You’re Struggling With Mental Health Issues
Maybe you’re going through a rough patch, and your mental health is at an all-time low. In this case, getting married most likely wouldn’t help and would only add more stress to your already fragile mental health. Taking a lengthy break from relationships during a tough mental patch is a smart idea and will help you sort your issues out.
11. Planning Out Your Future Isn’t A Strong Suit
If you’re the kind of person who starts palpitating the moment someone asks you “Where do you see yourself in five years?” you definitely don’t want to add to the stress by thinking of marriage. There’s nothing wrong with just going with the flow.
12. You’re Perfectly Happy Being Single
And finally, the most essential point of them all — being happy with your solo status. Being single isn’t a crime, and you shouldn’t feel pressured to tie the knot just because the clock is ticking. Maybe your friends are getting married left, right, and center and that’s perfectly alright. Your life journey shouldn’t have to mirror or coincide with theirs. There are numerous people who choose to remain single their entire life, and they do very well for themselves. And if you ever want to have children, there are many methods available that wouldn’t require the help of a partner.
All in all, marriage is a very personal choice, and nobody should feel pressured to indulge in it just because people around them are getting married. What do you think of our list? Do you believe in marriage and see yourself getting married in the future?
